“This is absurd,” Arthus muttered for the hundredth time as he paced back and forth in front of the invisible barrier. I was keeping my hand on it, feeling it weaken under my fingers as our brave, wonderful, determined mate dismantled the wards from the inside, all by herself.

Arthus had calmed down for a while, bolstered by the pulses of emotion Fi was sending through the bond. We were all watching the bond though, and we knew something had happened that had given her a scare.

Whatever it was, she’d recovered from it and sent us each another burst of reassurance. Regardless, we were more on edge than ever. Arthus was past the edge, floundering somewhere in the deep end.

“What do we do with the other prisoners once we release them?” Marlen asked in a deceptively casual tone, trying to break Arthus out of his panicked state.

“What do you mean we? Nothing. Our priority is Fi’s safety,” Arthus snapped, immediately at attention.

“You know as well as I do she won’t be comfortable leaving them if they’ve got nowhere to go,” Marlen pointed out.

“She won’t have a choice,” Bryn cut in, his expression grim. “We’ll be on the run once the Castells find out what happened here. They’ll assume Fi was the one to cross through the wards.”

“I can provide shelter for anyone who needs it,” Brently volunteered quietly, taking us all by surprise. “I don’t know what you have planned but I know it’s bigger than what’s happening here. I’ve been watching this property for months, I know we’ll find something awful behind these wards. If your plan means taking down Glendower and Evalina Castell, and any other corrupt Councillors, I want in.”

“Do you swear to keep any prisoners who leave with you safe and not to disclose their whereabouts to anyone?” Bryn asked, taking a step towards Brently and reaching out his hand to strike a deal.

“Of course,” Brently replied, looking offended that Bryn had even asked as he clapped his hand into Bryn’s and agreed to the terms.

“Glad that’s settled,” Arthus grunted, satisfied now we weren’t bringing a bunch of escapees home with us.

The cloaking shield rippled under my hand, followed by another rush of reassurance from Fi.

“That’s three down,” Marlen said out loud for Brently and the dragons’ benefit.

“She was faster that time,” Bryn commented quietly.

“Good,” Ezra gritted out impatiently. The five of them had been standing in a silent row at the very edge of the barrier, bodies coiled to spring at the first opportunity. They were a standoffish bunch, but I felt for them. Their mate was so close yet they still couldn’t get to her.

I could relate to that frustration at the moment.

“I think I can see something in the distance,” Seff blurted, squinting at the shield. Dragons had heightened senses, they could see things we couldn’t.

“I see it too. It looks like the outline of a house, but it’s kind of fuzzy,” Levi added.

“Remember, the house is irrelevant to us,” Ezra reminded them. “The prisoners are on the grounds.
